Hour of Penance was good until they changed out their brutal, groove/rhythm-based sound for a more melodic one

Fleshgod Apocalypse is okay, but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to them

Why are you bashing Odious Mortem while recommending Origin and First Fragment? They're in the same scene. Origin and First Fragment are actually less niche than Odious Mortem.

Good BDM should have something to fill the dearth left by the brutality. Suffocation does this by having cool rhythms and melody in some accented notes. Early Hour of Penance has cool rhythms. (Old) Nile has catchy riffs. Origin is nothing; they are just pure brutality.

First Fragment is pretty good; I have some of their songs in my tech death and "liked songs" playlist

There's a place and time for both. Sometimes, I like the more nuanced music of groups like suffocation and First Fragment, sometimes I just want the sheer brutality of Origin, which I can perceive and understand after listening to this style for a looooong time.
