My school requires windows to run certain programs I would probably do it otherwise

there's a program in linux called wine, it can run .exe files without an emulation.

what are those so called certain programs doe?, it depends on the type od program you're trying to execute, try linux on a virtual machine first and try to run those programs in wine

btw to install wine just go to the terminal and type sudo apt install wine

shit like fusion 360 and other shit for manufacturing, also a bunch of maritime simulators and physics simulation programs, I guess nothing that would outright refuse to start on linux
