The centralization of the internet is what ruined it

more like the amount of red tape bureaucracy enabling monopolies like Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Microsoft to exist. These monopolies then impose political embargos on chuddies or anyone who doesn't bow down to their slop.

Thank you @An Hero for your post. Your post makes it clear that the problem isn't just centralization, they would still have the same tendencies if they self-hosted some open source discord alternative.

Do you have a take on the mythology of obscure platforms being "upstream" of other culture and other platforms? It is fascinating to see it actually happen sometimes.

I think the appeal of the myth is "quirkie"-like: the desire to be part of an obscure but influential club. Like a secret shared in whispers, "All the really good memes on reddit come from a dangerous heckin' imageboardarino..." The desire for your special club to be an oasis, for its discovery to be an adventure or a stroke of luck. The fediversees hate search, but would they hate a "send me to a random site" button? I don't exactly hate this idea. The part where you are culturally influential is less quirkie (they care more about direct social contact, maybe even hate being seen) but doesn't fit the wiki/lore mindset either.

Sorry for replying late but if you still lurk here, the concept of webrings (look it up for more information but it's essentially a set of sites that intentionally all link to each other on either their banners, home page, or another easy to access location but usually have different purposes/different types of content) is very similar to what you described. It's used a lot by zoomers RPing as oldtroons with neocities sites, and I'd argue that the combination of soyjak.party, the soyjak wiki, soybooru, and soyjak.blog fit the definition of a webring.

Squarespace won. Neocities lost.

I think they are 2 different subgenres of sites due to squarespace being mainly used for companies and more professional projects and neocities being used more for proof of concept sites that are for entertainment. A similar comparison is -.github.io and scratch.

Why is the gamer word censored, but only in quoted usernames?
