Tails isn't fodder and neither is Sonic.
Sonic has shown incredible feats in base, from tanking black holes in Colors and defeating universe busting machinery in base, he's far from "fodder".
Same goes for Tails, he's capable of catching up with Sonic in base, a speed often referred to as "the speed of sound" in-game and in-canon alongside incredible feats such as being able to cling onto an entire rocket that flew into space in the matter of seconds and tanking a miniature black hole that even Sonic couldn't in Forces.
