Exactly. There were instances of oppression too but for the most part the Ottoman way of doing things was to assimilate and give the conquered a way to cooperate with the new system. We are taught about the good parts of living under Ottoman rule here in Turkey but in the west they portray us as if we were the biggest demons on earth. Even Konstantin Mihailovic, a Serbian janissary who lived at that time gives credit to the Turks by saying they are a merciful people who help and do charity towards even non-muslims.
