If I have to read, I read to learn new skills. Reading a book is the equivalent of watching TV, or a movie. You aren't an intellectual when you constantly tell people you read books. Reading George Orwell is no different than watching the Incredibles and it won't make me a better engineer

Reading fiction doesn't mean you won't learn a thing from it tho. Folk tales were teaching people important lessons for centuries, If a book makes you think or delve into it's message then it's not any worse than a textbook. Not all fiction is pure entertainment, unless you consume something with no intellectual value, like superhero movies.
