i think undertale would work better with a morality meter of sorts, because pure genocide and pacifism is just dumb and stupid. You definitely have a market, there are lots of people out there looking for an RPG (especially good fallout-types) that doesn't have the modern indie dev crap in it and if you just innovate the combat system and don't steal any of the plot beads (I don't know why you would ever want to) I think you could get the "spiritual successor" title instead of clone, undertale did come out 9 years ago now. Of course the diehard fans would come at you but I do honestly believe that "undertale with good writing and real choices" could be a best seller because a lot of people sit in the same boat.
what if i made a game where the tutorial of the game is a friendly npc you meet being put into a hostage situation, and therefore, pure pacifism and pure genocide is impossible.
you must either kill to save your friend, or do nothing and cause your friend to die due to negligence, at which point, you'd have to fight your friend's killer.
in which if you spare him, you are Retarded. Personally that's what I think atleast because in life, sometimes you have to make a lot of hard choices and things aren't always black and white. sometimes you have to do bad things, but that doesn't necessarily make you a bad person. I think Undertale tries to do that, but it always just results in flavour text with the route ultimately being the same, you can play the entire game and kill everyone but spare like 1 monster and the game won't consider you genocide which is retarded.
i could even add in three-way trolley problems where instead of "kill 5 people save 1 person kill 1 person save 5 people" there could be 3 tracks and whichever track you pick will heavily affect the game. but most of this is just an idea though and if i made it i probably wouldn't release it under this psuedonym. but i am sharing this thought because i wanted to express my feelings about undertale and what could make the game better i guess. like imagine undertale but you get to choose your class, you can be an archer, a mage, a swordsman or maybe a healer or a priest / pacifist who stops fights with reason and peace. but maybe some people just can't be reasoned with and you have to learn to deal with that. there is no such thing as true pacifism, but pacifism to the extent where you did all you could to provide the most peace to the most people.
on the flipside there could be genuine asshole behaviour where you do the worst to the most people for no reason other than your own satisfaction
such a game would allow you to level up and gain xp even when doing pacifist actions and the xp and level can act like a charisma stat, making bosses and enemies easier to reason with.
reasoning with them would be like a dialogue minigame in which you have to identify what they believe in and try to calm them down, etc.
