Basically, red votes get counted much faster because they are from rural areas, making the early stages of the election look like a republican victory, but as the hours progress the democrat votes begin to pile in from the giant urban cities which takes longer to count and swings the election back to the blue side.

There is probably some of that occurring, but I think that democrat early voting has always been bigger than republican early voting, except this year it seems to be on par. The exploitation of early voting will give republicans a couple points ahead of their usual numbers ( because bigger timeframe=bigger number of people that come in), whereas the democrats normal numbers are including the extra votes from early voting, because they've been doing it since 2016. Tldr, I think most republican voters are too wary to opt out of voting just because it looks good at the moment. Complacency ruined Clinton's campaign and also Trump's campaign in 2020. This time, neither side is complacent so I predict they're going to have record breaking turnout by probably around 22 million votes.
