i use cinnamon in linux mint it works well

I usually use i3 (gaps are included), im going to use hyprland once I get into linux again. As for DE's, I'd say KDE or TDE for muh heccin' frootiger airdoe.

Cinnamon has the edge of being modern and more support, MATE just werks(tm) but is essentially on life support in 2024. If you want a DE that is great, and will only get better, use Cinnamon.

Desktop Environments are useless and bloat, get i3wm and use feh for your background or xwinwrap with mpv for animated wallpapers.
Use polybar for something more appealing, then rofi to select applications. Need an app in your rofi? Make a script for it, put it in a path folder and just run it, like I do.
I find Desktop Environments to be mostly for Windows-type people, I really dislike them.

nigga it takes like an hour at most, i speedrun i3wm installs everytime i make a server that requires graphical capabilities. Also, i3wm, perfect for servers that require graphics for some reason.
