Half-Life is keyed in every way shape and form, the original game is actually my #1 favorite of all time and I can literally play it forever and ever, the expansions are really fun as well that expand the Black Mesa incident to a greater scale. The second game and its episodes are lesser IMO but are still 9/10s.

Valve's theme that you hear in the start of all of their games is actually just the theme from midway through Surface Tension, the longest chapter of HL1. Man the game's cinematics are still incredible today for a 20 year old game, like the tentacle in Blast Pit, the jets in Surface Tension. It's just incredible really I implore you play it; the game really set the bar for what a good singleplayer FPS is while still feeling arena shooter-y.

half life 2 episode 1 and 2 are the gems that saved the franchise but also killed it because they didn't feel confident in releasing episode 3 without disappointing everyone
half life alyx is mediocre. it was fun but you need a headset. vr is soy

HL 1 is overrated as hell honestly, it has a good enemy variation and is evolutionary for its age but that's all, the shooting feels unsatisfying and the game is really poorly balanced. Sometimes it's really frustrating due to how bullet spongey enemies are and the amount of damages they can do to you, even Far Cry 1 feels more fair to play.
Don't even bother with hl2 at all because it looks poorly aged for me ngl.
No one lives forever (not half life but gave me similar vibes) are far better games, but still feels rather underwhelming.

half life 2 would be better than the first if they just took it back from "muh story worldbuilding" and focused more on gameplay but its still really fun nonetheless
the first episode is ass

and i havent played alyx because im not blowing my shekels on an expensive headset and a 60 shekel game just for more half life

The movement feels significantly worse and your arsenal is gimped significantly, the level design is a downgrade on the original and sections that really could've been changed for the better didn't get it. All the puzzles were replaced with plug puzzles or a single barrel puzzle, the HECU are just reskinned combine and don't act like HECU marines at all. The new music is unfitting when its used and is inferior quality to the original and the new VA is similarly worse, especially for the scientists. It is also made for DSPtype retards who need to have the game crouchjump for them. Honestly the only thing better about Black Mesa are the graphics and that's just boiling down to being made in a different, newer engine.
