You have to have a stable environment in order to create the groundworks for such a system, and you can't have democracy without an informed public. I'm an enviromentalist and I think before considering the ethics of capitalism, I think we need to address the circumstances of the world as it is, and how it's going up in flames. But, to answer your question directly, it benefits the affluent and powerful, that is a given.

Capitalism works ok until people try to integrate socialist policies that shit everything up. It should either no government control on prices and markets or complete control. No country is either of those things, we're all stuck in a crypto-capitalism/crypto-socialist Limbo.

Capitalism is probably the best model to run an industrialized society, but that is if you assume the fundamental premise that industrialization is humanity's natural trajectory as true. I think it's a tad bit arrogant of the modern world to use technological/social advancement as the only measure of human progress. From a spiritual/humanist standpoint, one could look at the modern world's pursuit of materialism and argue humanity has actually regressed tremendously.

Industrialization is still a relatively recent development in human history, I don't think anyone truly knows the right way to navigate this sort of landscape. Sure we like to call for the return to tradition, but many of the social value systems we inherit from the pre-industrialized world admittedly have little practical use today. I have no alternatives to offer. I think we have opened Pandora's box. We fought wars and revolutions for over two centuries and arrived at capitalism, so I suppose capitalism is the best we can do.
