oh yeah pikemen were used to like push calvary away which is why soldiers were in those line formations because no cavalryman wants to get impaled at the end of a bayonet

Even against a bolt action, if you were to, say, jump into a trench and land right in front of someone, the man with the sword wins and the man with the gun never gets a chance to even aim in such a tight space.
It's easier to pull one hand back to make room for a thrust, or raise it to slash downward, than it is to move your rifle back to make room to fire at the enemy. If you do get the chance to shoot (from the hip, in this case, is the only option) you'd better make a killshot, or you're going to get hacked to shit by a rabid animal of a man before you can even touch the bolt.

no. i believe this was the opposite, this was used in the british expedition into ethiopia and the first italian-ethiopian war, by the ethiopians.

named after a ukrainian city, it was the first piece of advanced weaponry made by an independent african nation, it took 6 years to make, and i believe was made in the 1850s.

Trench maces worked well too I doubt many people held swords but they had maces to bash the head in of the enemy

Have one of those (reproduction) and the prolonged reloading process would be forgivable but it's just not reliable, probably will fire 50% of the time.
