I don't like these "upvotes", either. The current reactions have soul, they have character, and they actually convey complex emotion, even when the reaction is the simple "like button" itself. When I directly, plainly enjoy a post, I give it a joyous white thumb surrounded with a circle of blue. When you see that symbol, you feel agreed with. Someone has acknowledged your post, and they liked it, in the literal sense of bestowing upon it that reaction, and in the other sense, as they found some proper thought from your post, and they liked, or enjoyed, it. When you see these Reddit updoots, they have no connection to the human figure. Not one of the appendages that emerge from my hand form an upward or downward-facing chevron. My thumb does emerge from my hand, and with its rotation alone can it convey more emotion than these arrows while already fulfilling their purpose. When I laugh, my mouth does not turn into an upward-facing chevron. The "GEG!" reaction already conveys this feeling of laughter instead. When I'm pained by what I've just read, I similarly do not turn my mouth into a perfectly downward-facing chevron. The "It Hurts" reaction is already there to use. This up-and-down-arrow rating system lacks all of what we already have, and I don't see what's necessary about it. There isn't a purpose for two different rating systems besides worthless clutter.
