That type of armor is called "Laminar". The Japanese made similar armor and I think the armor of the winged hussars was Laminar Armor as well.

japanese armor looks cool but also always looked impractical to me, IDK if it actually does much.

If I remember correctly Japanese smiths actually shot their armor with matchlock guns to test them

Japanese armor of that time was patterned after western designs btw. Plate armor, especially late Renaissance Plate armor, was very much capable of withstanding musket fire and such
