I still don't like modern minecraft, it's in a weird state. What's supposed to be a really fun, easygoing casual game about building, surviving, exploring and in general, just chilling out has turned into this extremely cartoony over vibrant over exaggerated game, thanks to the art direction and Lena Raine. The contrast between C418's calm but somewhat melancholic tunes and Lena Raine's completely overly bombastic ost is genuinely so bizarre to me, like literally. The first track here is in the same fucking game as the second track.
Lena Raine's music feels like a crappy bootleg knockoff. I mean that literally is the modern versions of the game.
Its for this reason that I typically just play Better Than Adventure mod these days. But with general gripes aside, shitty pre-recorded live shows and a game that has a new identity that clashes heavily with it's old one (I am absolutely certain while playing modern versions you might walk into something that'll make you feel like you're playing Minecraft Minecraft again. Like you'll be in a normal plains biome, no overhauled fucking villages, bees and a bunch of other bombastic shit, just a normal plains biome with trees, building your house and instead of lena raine music, suddenly dry hands starts playing for some reason. And then after that, you'll dig down like 5 blocks to get into a cave with a bunch of weird looking leaves and spikes and axolotls and shit) they're adding a new mob and a new biome called the Creaking. Now when I thought of this I thought "are they adding fucking herobrine?" but unfortunately, the mob is nowhere near as scary as herobrine.
I personally would really like to see a mob that actually is creepy, a mob that lurks in the shadows and doesn't want to be seen, a mob that extinguishes torches and engulfs you when in complete darkness for example, so you'll be mining in a cave and all of the sudden your torches have extinguished and it's pitch black and something is killing you but you don't know what until you place down a torch and watch it's tentacles run away or something, like in Don't Starve. Something like that would be amazing for Minecraft, you know? Like they just drop a random update one day and they added something that's genuinely scary. What we got though is kind of a little disappointing.
The creaking is a cool idea on paper I guess, I like the idea of a biome with no music, it's eerie, it's odd and a mob that was intentionally designed to not really fit into the game, but I feel like they under delivered, because once you spot it, it doesn't disappear, it just stands still until you look away like a weeping angel. This is just unsatisfying to me because if you're ever planning on actually being scared of this thing, sorry but mojang have just made yet another thing that's not scary. The creeper is scarier than the creaking, it pops out of nowhere and once you see it, it fucking explodes. The Creeper, I think, is probably one of the most scariest mobs in the entirety of Minecraft, you can just be mining one day and that green little fucker will get you out of nowhere. And the noises it makes? It's footsteps sound like a player's footsteps. That's fucked up.
But yeah, yet another update from Mojang that misses the mark for me personally. I really would have liked it if they just kept Minecraft as the game it was supposed to be but now it's just a lot, you know? Playing BTA for a long while taught me that the only mobs we really need is creepers, spiders, skeletons and zombies. I quite like minecraft more when it was more simpler, even 1.8.9 or 1.7.10 was alright because the additions didn't interfere with the feel of the game at all. But seeing these corporate hacks sit around, fake laughing while overhyping the most boring shit ever and hosting a live show that does absolutely fuck all but completely waste your time for like an hour, it's excruciating.
To me there are 3 versions of Minecraft, Notch's game, Mojang's game and Microsoft's game. Notch's game was awesome, Mojang's game was alright and Microsoft's game? Well, if you like it good for you, but it's just so weird for me to even compare. Most of Lena Raine's calmer tracks are boring, uninspired and in general, contain no sections that are rememberable in any way and the sections that are rememberable are often too overtly vibrant.
Anyways, I'd recommend you check out BTA at betterthanadventure.net
It's beta 1.7.3 but extended with genuinely fun gameplay tweaks and items that fit into the game quite well. It's getting to the point now where most people play Minecraft with mods or fans and indie devs kind of have to take over the project these days.
