One story I like from the Islamic hadiths is the story of Julaybib. It is said that Julaybib was an outcast in Medina, he was severely deformed (appearance wise), never had a wife and some sources even mention that the kids around Medina would throw rocks at him for 'fun'. When Muhammad was in Medina he apparently went out of his way to give special attention to this guy, no one cared about him other than the prophet. Muhammad even arranged a marriage for this guy, getting him one of the most sought after women of the city as a wife. In return for this, Julaybib was willing to fight for Islam and accompanied the prophet in an expedition against polytheists. He died during the war after killing seven polytheists and was then buried by Muhammad himself. Just goes to show appealing to lower class men is a good idea for spreading your religion I suppose. I think the equivalent of this in Christianity would be the Book of Job.
