One thing California does deserve credit for, as well as the greater West Coast, is their musical contributions and reputation. They're usually the ones to have naturally cool bands or the first to take sounds from abroad. So you'll end up with bands from The Merry-Go-Round and The Beach Boys, to Sly and the Family Stone, to Brian Jonestown Massacre and CAKE. Then bands like The Dandy Warhols and Portugal. the Man in Oregon, and then the greater Grunge scene in Washington.
