I don't get the point of flags

I get what flags are meant to do, and that's to distinguish something apart internationally, but that's it. Flags are pointless waving fabric that people obsess over.

Before flags were widespread, people didn't use anything to distinguish nations because the idea of nation states didn't even exist. Empires were either the lands of an emperor or some institution like the Roman senate and the city of Rome.

>inb4 muh legionnaire standards or the "flag" of rome
Those are for identifying legions. People don't need a flag. Why do Romans need a flag when they know they live in the Roman Empire?

>inb4 muh "coat of arms"
Achievements represent individuals, not states. They're like the profile pictures of the middle ages or something

The only time flags make sense is internationally to distinguish countries from each other. It's simpler to just show a flag instead of the name of a country. It doesn't make sense to hoist your own country's flag in your country and outside of government buildings or during peacetime.

they do infact look cool

I said it's meant to represent sovereign states
why does everything need some sort of practical purpose nigga
also showing a bunch of png's of digital flags doesn't prove your point and you're retarded
If it doesn't have a practical purpose then it shouldn't exist

I said it's meant to just represent sovereign states
Why only that? Why would it be limited to representing states when it can be used to represent other things, such as unions, parties, ideologies, regions, or any other grouping of people? I don't understand what's there not to understand when it comes to use of flags as symbols
Or are you asking why flags of countries are hoisted in front of government buildings because that sounds like a retarded question

Flags were meant to distinguish. It's how people used to tell apart friendly ships from neutral or enemy ships. It evolved to distinguishing countries from each other. My point is that flags aren't primarily meant to identify or represent something, but to easily distinguish. All of the things you mentioned could've just used an emblem. The whole point of the OP is that we're overusing flags as if they're emblems.

I brought up tricolors because those are harder to distinguish from other tricolors. A flag should have a different silhouette from each other instead of just alternating the colors from the same 3 bars.

If earth was just a single country, it probably wouldn't use a flag because there's no other countries at all. People wouldn't need to use a flag to distinguish apart countries because there's only one. Maybe regions

I don't see what you're getting at, what practical difference is there between representing something and distinguishing it from something else? The difference seems mostly in semantics. How else would you represent it? As for why we use flags over emblems, it's because flags look cool. having a cloth blow in the wind is cooler and more practical than a static emblem, and you can put emblems on flags. The fact that most flags don't have emblems (or complex patterns) on them is a sign of the times mostly.

Nah, it definitely would.
>but for what practical reason?
Looking cool, having something to represent them, having something to hoist up during their travels and expeditions, having something to swear allegiance to
