I think people do it because they see pets as "cute". Especially with dogs, all they do is bark, and leech of their owners. Not to mention they are loud and bark at things for no reason. And it pisses me off how people can't even train their dogs to not bark at something they see.

I think the excessive (unhealthy) love some women have for animals is them projecting their motherly feelings onto animals like cats or dogs because many of them don't have any children these days.
