It is a simplified real time spinoff of standard pokemon battling, that is far easier to wrap your head around but also quite complex and high skill celing in itself.
There is too much depth to the system to say in one post though without it being a text wall. I reccomend you look at a youtube video giving a rundown of how it works.
In short it makes pokemon that would never normally be viable viable. Its kind of like playing in RU or UU tier smogon regulations in terms of what pokemon you will see.
Dunsparce and corsola are some of the biggest meta threats for example.
You also have to go out and grind to build pokemon for pvp, and they make changes to the move stats and distribution every few months, which shakes up the meta and makes new pokemon viable, meaning you will always be working to/getting new toys to play with so you never get bored.
Also speed and attack minmaxxed pokemon are far less dominant than they are in the original games, which is a breath of fresh air.

It also requires you to go outside to get the pokemon so you get far less weirdos in the community and far more normal people who actually have lives. I see that often as a general rule with communities, the more the topic of a fanbase involves going outside and not being a hermit, the less degenerates there are in it.
