It might have something to do with people's attention spans getting worse. I used to be able to watch 40-50 minutes long lets play videos easily on one sitting, no problem. Now I can see most people don't focus that much. The masses prefer shorter and faster content, so the trend shifted towards it.

Do you expect people to do the same thing forever? Also, the average person who isn't supported through Patreon will be able to get more money through Twitch. Also, lets plays aren't dead. I watch a guy who got popular off of Oxygen Not Included stuff and then branched out. He is the only person I watch this sort of stuff from thoughie.
