Actually, now that I remember this video more, I believe the aftermath of it was that they were reprimanded for using "excessive force", so maybe you are right

Admittedly, using a minigun mounted on a helicopter is excessive, but i felt it was a very quick and easy solution.
Plus, there might have been guards around that area that might not have been able to let Mexican millitary snipers stay alive.

I heard different, that the military is usually able to beat them head to head. I’d imagine they wouldn’t fight them due to bribes, numerical inferiority, logistical concerns, what have you. But I can believe that they could at least hold their own sufficiently.

I hope so. The looming threat of economic annihilation is probably a strong motivator also.
