pretty much mexican-americans. the cvltvre however, was present since the united states took the southwest from mexico.

the chicano movement arose around the 40's all the way until the 70's. after ww2, mexican-americans were treated poorly despite fighting for the united states. this, along with the land grants that the treaty of guadalupe-hidalgo promised (however the senate amended the removal of land grants that were to be rightfully handed down to the mexican(now american) citizens in the southwest), racial tensions, mistreatment of farm workers, mistreatment of mexican-americans in public schools, prohibition of spanish being spoken in public, discrimination, etc. were what sparked the chicano movements and protests.

around the 1920's, chicanos and mexican nationals began to differentiate from one another.
