I have a somewhat bad hearing, often I have to "what?" multiple times if there's noise.
like 2 years ago when the world hit 8 billion population some guy at my collage I barely know told me that in small talk
"hey you hear the world hit 8 billion population?"
Now I was out of the loop, I didn't know this. I also didn't hear him proper, I just heard "8" "-illion" "population" so I inferred he said Serbia hit 8 million population (ill inference, our population is NOT going up)
So I responded "ah yeah, it's all the immigrants"
He was like "uh, yeah... And Chinese as well" to which I responded something like "yeah we've got a lot of them too"
I later realized what he was talking about and how absurd my responses were. I still find this exchange very funny to think about
