One explanation I heard is that it was a spy ship listening to Israeli communications during the 6 Day War and the Israelis wanted to stop them from doing that because it'd reveal that they started the war o algo

It was a horrific tragedy, there's a good documentary on the attack if anyone is interested.
We can only really speculate of the Jews' reasons, as there is no official reasoning I know of from them that isn't just the Israeli government excusing it with "well, it was all just a big accident". It could have been some sort of failed false-flag-style operation (it wouldn't be the first time, with the Lavon Affair a decade-and-some earlier), or maybe some matter like what anglo_bvll said, but we really don't have a definitive answer.

I don't really care so duct taped.

i found this one quote from the wikipedia page and thought it might be interesting

>According to Israeli sources, at the start of the war on 5 June, General Yitzhak Rabin, Israeli Air Force (IAF) chief of staff informed Commander Ernest Carl Castle, the American naval attaché in Tel Aviv, that Israel would defend its coast with every means at its disposal, including sinking unidentified ships. He asked the U.S. to keep its ships away from Israel's shore or at least inform Israel of their exact positions.[14][a] American sources said that no inquiry about ships in the area was made until after the attack on Liberty. In a message sent from U.S. Secretary of State Dean Rusk to U.S. Ambassador Walworth Barbour in Tel Aviv, Israel, Rusk asked for "urgent confirmation" of Israel's statement. Barbour responded: "No request for info on U.S. ships operating off Sinai was made until after Liberty incident." Further, Barbour stated: "Had Israelis made such an inquiry it would have been forwarded immediately to the chief of naval operations and other high naval commands and repeated to dept [Department of State]."

Because they knew they could get away with it, and they were right. Try casually mentioning the Liberty incident to a typical person and watch them short-circuit.
They'll come up with cope after cope for how it was an "accident" and then they'll say "it doesn't matter".
All I needed to know was that a U.S. flag was flying on that ship while it was attacked. And even if that wasn't true, the giant white letters on the hull were definitely there.

Why would the us care if they started the war geg. Judging by how they did nothing after the whole incident means they probably wouldn't even care if Israel started the war

It's not really speculative because we know a jet fighter was en route to Cairo armed with a nuclear warhead. It was recalled the moment they realized that the plan went afoul. There is some quote about killing the traitors before the enemy. These are the goyim shits that work in our gov't. They actually planned it with the kikes. If I was a kike, I would think the goyim were retarded too.
