Serious What is the deal with the global popularity of visually identifying with depicting onself with images of little moe anime girls on the internet?

What psychological and cultural factors/principles/events/phenomena resulted in the present day near global internet phenomenon, that given the choice of whatever image they could possibly think of on the internet to depict themselves as (such as a profile pic, reaction image. etc.) they overwhelmingly choose, more than anything else, little girls in the moe anime artstyle to the point where you can see such profile pictures reliably almost anywhere you go on the internet, not only outside of places related to the source material, but even in places where such material is negatively percieved and stigmatized?
Why is the choice to identify and depict oneself as the moe anime girl so unexpectedly common?
I know there are some oldfags here. I'm looking for serious answers.

And why is it so normalized that even the people obsessed with hating anime are desensitized to it and rarely comment on such choices as much as you would expect them to?

I don't think most people imagine themselves as the character from the picture they are posting when they use a reaction picture, at least most of the time, but just the emotion they're portraying. Old people use characters from cartoons or movies for children as reaction pictures all the time.

Usually when I see anime reaction images it's on 4chan and I'm like I think every time I see one of those it's like I just think they want to fuck the girl they posted.

I dunno, it depends on the context. I saw my teacher use a K-ON sticker once, it ain't something to make a big deal out of by itself

Speaking of which, why do you use Mymy as your profile pic?
