talk about mods, general stuff like time trials, or hosting and playing on online matches for all the online mario karts (DS, Wii, 7, 8/8 Deluxe)

DS is mostly dead in terms of finding rooms, plus it's the worse since only 4 people can race in a room (can be played on an emulator using melonds, but you need a ds bios stuff, but you can find it on the internet archive)

Wii is usually the most active, it can be played on a real console, wii u, and on dolphin which required a NAND from a real console. (both DS and Wii use wimmfi)

7 is also pretty active through the pretendo service, as well as through ctgp-7. you can usually find a room, but pretendo is not usable on citra, but ctgp 7 can be played online with an emulator, but only with other emulator users (usually dead and you get paired with bots)

8 on the Wii U is also supported with pretendo, i believe it can also be played on emulator, as well as being able to play it on a unmodified console through a dns exploit

also here's me playing some wii online, with some custom music i've been playing around with here
I recommended using a distribution called CTGP-Dolphin to use custom music online, as it uses pulsar, which handles custom stuff really well. if you don't know how to use it, just put your custom music in the "My Stuff" folder, this is how every distribution handles custom music. Then make sure you put the "CTGP-Dolphin" and "rivolution" folder into one folder, then put that big folder into the "Riivolution" folder in dolphin it may be in your document or appdata if you use windows, but usually you can find it by going Load-> Riivolution. Then just right click on Mario kart wii on the "start with riivolution patches, find the ctgp dolphin folder, click on the riivolution folder inside and click the .xml file. have the exact same settings as shown in pircel otherwise it won't work.
