How come Muslims failed to convert most Indians to Islam despite conquering so much of India and holding it for centuries? What makes Hinduism resistant to that?

i think a reason is the age of hinduism, it was prominent for so long indians knew nothing different causing so much resistance. kinda similar to christianity in japan in some aspects.

It's not resistance, rather the Muslims (mughals) treated them as people of the book (what we consider christians and jews n shit, which Hindus obviously are not) and only took taxes instead of converting them like for example what happened in Iran

Yeah I've read about that. I guess Muslims had to go easy on them since they were so numerous. When Muslims encounter pagans they are technically supposed to just give the option to convert or die. That wasn't really a realistic option with Hindus though.

The Hanafis who are the major maddhab in India, and some of the Maalikis said: Jizyah may be accepted from the foreign mushrikeen, but never the mushrikeen among the Arabs.
The majority of Shaafa‘i and Hanbali fuqaha’ are of the view that it cannot be accepted from mushrikeen at all; nothing can be accepted from them except their becoming Muslim or being fought.
Since most Turks are hanafis and the Mughals were too, this was why.

If they were of another jurisprudence, like if they were Hanbali, there would probably be a few hundred million less Hindus today (and perhaps a few hundred million less people)
