I don't know for sure, either. The actual scene showed the guards stripping him and holding him down, then it cuts to an emotionless Arthur being dragged to his cell. I had thought they were trying to change him into his prison uniform or something, but rape seems likely the more I think about it.

It wasn't, the majority of the movie is a nothingburger consisting of boring courtroom shit and shitty musical numbers that all feel like filler. Then in one court session Joker shittalks the prison guards and then they gangrape him for whatever reason and then he becomes a whiny pussy and then all of his followers leave him and then one of them stabs him in prison.
Granted, I think part of the reason for Joker giving up "being Joker" or whatever is because he saw his old midget friend traumatized and one of his prison buddies getting killed by a guard but the way that it's structured it seems like he got raped into becoming a beta slave. If I wrote this movie, I would've just gotten rid of the rape, have them slam Arthur on the wall for a few times and force him to watch them kill Arthur's one prison friend, I think it would've better sold the idea that the reason Arthur "gave up being the Joker" is because of the effect its having on the few people that care about him.
I didn't mind the idea of Joker being inevitably killed by one of his followers, but its the execution of everything beforehand that really soured that scene for me.

I thought he got raped when I first saw it, I think the closeup to him not wearing any pants made it clear that some Diddy shit went down

As terrible the script is I can't say the premise doesn't at least feel like a logical continuation of the first movie. The best I can take out of this sequel is a cautionary tale about letting an extreme persona take over you, I think of someone like Paul Miller and I wonder if he has much of him left beneath all the chuddiness he's embraced.
