Main camobase I worked on

Theres just a lot of dithering, thats about it
1718052702256.png
I was toying around with the color curves
1718052707043.png
colors based on izlom/skol
1718052711127.png
This one isn't based on the previously posted but I took inspiration from that stritchtarn camo and that polygon swedish camo, colors are based on some chechen variant of ttsko

other than that I'm reading peak kino rn (Soukou Akki Muramasa), I'm just starting but the prologue is really strong with this one.

I should get a smaller base, the seams on 800x600 are NOT GOOD and very noticable. Seven colors (multicam also has 7 colors, coal camo but it works I guess) for this is a pretty good number though so I'll try to make something good out of this

Cool and funny rus camo based on amerimutt MARPAT camo
1718129376982.png

Personally this is probably one of the most better (it just looks cool) looking camo patterns

Some other shit I was making for some shitty LARP worldbuilding thing I had going on, tried making it look chinese and third world, think I nailed it for the most part.

some other stuff, dithering looks very beautiful imo

hi camo guy
im a game developer, how might one go about creating convincing camo patterns for video games?
i ask because i tried making an army guy in blender once and the camo texture looked like shite

TBH I'm not the guy to ask since I'm pretty bad at it since im sub 98 iq, but Ill try my best to answer
<convincing
Eh, if you're talking about real life equivalent it's a bit messy, so Ill go on about colors first
You don't need to have a good eye on how to make camos look good, hell I don't even know the basics of color theory but I can tell what looks ugly from what looks somewhat aesthetically pleasing
For example
images-600.jpeg

Look at this shit, no comment. BUT it was in display by a real army so thats that, it looks like shit but it was manufactured by the army.
images-601.jpeg

Here's another thing by that same country, it copies flecktarn but the color palette makes it golden, creme de la cob.

But yeah enough of that rambling, if you meant convincing as in like Military stuff, you don't need to go that over the top, keep it simple and nice, commercial market camo patterns go over the top because they design stuff for general fashion and daily use, not combat or activities that require protection
stuff like this
images-602.jpeg

This is not convincing army camo, keep it toned down and where it makes sense.
Russians (specifically FSB and OMON units) get away with flashy camos like blue in their camos because of the locations/standardization of where it's being used and issued, police and swat.
images-603.jpeg

(and because it looks cool + they're made for urban warfare or something)
In simple terms, make it simple, know where and when to use it (ei surroundings, locations etc), dont be afraid to copy real life examples, literally like every country in europe used/copied american/german camo, don't make it too digital, I mean like, don't do this
images-606.jpeg

images-605.jpeg

If you're gonna do digital you should try studying MARPAT, EMR and MM-14 with the colors and shapes
If you want to study traditional camo try studying ERDL and the American Woodland, hell even African camos are pretty nice, Rhodesian stuff does it's stuff well
Try playing around with colors, I'm using paint.net but there are probably better apps like GIMP or SAI, hex color picker also works
I make my camo patterns with messing around with the noises, crystallization and other effects in Paint.Net, with the extensions from the forums

And generally, a part of what makes it convincing if the uniform, if you saw bright erdl on shorts it was probably made by some fashion company.

images-607.jpeg

Here's some more commercial camo, its unavoidable sometimes if it doesn't look convincing
Heres some varied real ones for a ref
images-609.jpeg

Textures too are what make a big part of camos convincing but I don't want to elaborate on it right now, something about fabric and texture normal maps zzz 😴 zzz
