The only reasons people use discord are because it's convenient and popular (bandwagon). Theoretically, you could use Zoom, Skype, or (((Kiketrix))) to do most of the shit Discord does. Maybe also because they seem "le heckin cool chill gamer" even though they're run by glowkikes...
We live in dark times. Discord essentially has a monopoly over instant communication.

I only use the service when a tech related or other online space has ONLY a 'cord as their method of communication. I hate when they do this and I don't use it for anything else

Well, then I guess I'm neither an oldfag or a newfag, because I really don't use any chat protocols at all. Private messages and emails work just fine for me.
